PITTSBURGH–Pitt’s returning All-American all-purpose dynamo Quadree Henderson led the Gold Team to a 23-14 victory over the Blue Team in the Panthers’ 2017 Blue-Gold Spring Game presented by PNC.

With former Pitt greats such as Tyler Boyd, Jabaal Sheard, Larry Fitzgerald, Tyler Palko, Roger Kingdom, H.B. Blades, Ricardo McDonald and others in attendance, Henderson wowed Saturday’s Heinz Field crowd in accumulating 189 all-purpose yards in the game, including 84 yards rushing on just two carries. The speedster scored a 30-yard touchdown run on Gold’s first drive to open the scoring and broke an incredible, weaving 54-yard rush early in the second half that led to another touchdown for Gold.

The junior wide receiver, who was a consensus All-American kick returner in 2016, also had game-highs with five receptions for 53 yards and was credited with 52 kickoff return yards.

Led by Henderson and three field goals of 32, 38 and 35 yards by redshirt freshman Alex Kessman, the Gold Team established leads of 17-0 and 23-6 in the game before the Blue Team scored late on a beautiful 27-yard over-the-shoulder catch by sophomore Tre Tipton on a nice throw by quarterback senior Max Browne.

The game’s other scoring came from a 5-yard touchdown run by redshirt freshman running back Shawn Wood for Gold and a 12-yarder by redshirt freshman quarterback Thomas MacVittie for Blue.

Four quarterbacks received playing time for the Panthers on Saturday, with Max Browne leading the way with 144 yards and the touchdown to Tipton on 13-of-28 passing. Sophomore Ben DiNucci was a perfect 5-for-5 throwing for a total of 60 yards, mid-year true freshman enrollee Kenny Pickett tossed for 36 yards and rushed for 35 more, while MacVittie completed his only pass attempt for four yards.

In the running game, Chawntez Moss stood out by tallying 57 yards rushing on eight carries as nine Panthers recorded at least one carry in the contest.

Sophomore Maurice French (five receptions for 35 yards), redshirt freshman Ruben Flowers III (four catches for 47 yards), Tipton (two catches for 51 yards with a TD), junior Rafael Araujo-Lopes (two receptions for 11 yards) and sophomore DeAndre Schifino (two catches for 10 yards) all recorded multiple catches in the game.

Defensively, the Gold Team set the tone with seven tackles for loss and four sacks, led by senior defensive end Rori Blair, who posted two solo sacks. Redshirt freshman defensive end Rashad Weaver also had two TFLs with a sack, while another redshirt freshman, safety Bricen Garner, recovered a fumble for the game’s lone turnover after junior linebacker Oluwaseun Idowu popped the ball free.

The Blue Team’s defense was led by sophomore safety Jay Stocker, who tallied seven total tackles. Senior defensive end Allen Edwards amassed six tackles with two sacks, one TFL and a forced fumble, while junior linebacker Jalen Williams also totaled six tackles, 1.5 TFLs and a solo sack.
